Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)
Turn a Canadian credential into Canadian work experience — and a PR pathway.
The Post-Graduation Work Permit lets eligible graduates of Canadian institutions work in Canada, with the permit length tied to the program (up to 3 years). The Canadian work experience it provides is often the bridge to permanent residence through the Canadian Experience Class or a PNP.
Who it’s for
- Recent graduates of eligible Canadian DLIs
- Students planning a study → work → PR route
- Graduates in fields linked to long-term shortages
Key facts
- Permit length tied to program length, up to 3 years
- Usually a once-in-a-lifetime permit
- Since Nov 2024, most need CLB 7 (university) or CLB 5 (college)
- Non-degree graduates must be in an eligible field of study
How it works
- Graduate from an eligible program: Complete a program at a designated learning institution that qualifies for the PGWP.
- Meet language & field rules: Confirm your CLB result and, for non-degree programs, an eligible field of study.
- Apply within the deadline: Apply after you receive proof of completion, within the eligibility window.
- Build experience toward PR: Work in skilled (TEER 0/1/2/3) roles to qualify for CEC or a PNP.
Eligibility highlights
- Graduated from an eligible PGWP-qualifying program at a DLI
- Met the study and full-time enrolment requirements
